What We Believe

The Basics of Christian Belief.

God created human beings and gave them full and eternal life. However, people chose to disobey God, resulting in separation from Him. We may try to bridge this gap in various ways such as building up a credit of good deeds, religious observance, etc, but nothing that we can do by our own efforts can bring us back to God. The effects of this separation are a life now that is far from what God intended for us — evil, sickness, suffering — and eventually an eternal existence completely cut off from God and all that is good — death, destruction and hell.
The good news is that God has bridged the gap from His side. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to be the means by which we could come back to God. When He died on the cross, Jesus took the punishment for all our disobedience. Anyone who wants to can accept God's free gift of reconciliation through believing in Jesus and becoming one of His followers. He offers us forgiveness, an inner power from the Holy Spirit to live in the way He wants, and eternal life — starting now and continuing beyond physical death.

To accept God's gift we need to do four things:
1. Admit to God that we are cut off from Him by our wrongdoing and determine to turn our backs on our past life lived in a way that never reached God's standards.
2. Believe that Jesus died to take the blame for all our wrong thoughts, words and actions — whether we were aware of them or not.
3. Consider the implications of following Jesus:

  • Giving Jesus complete control over our lives.
  • Making some changes in the way we live.
  • Being known publicly as a Christian.

4. Decide to receive God's free offer of forgiveness, a new start and a new life that lasts forever, and commit ourselves to following Jesus for the remainder of our lives. If we sincerely do these things, God keeps His promise:

  • He considers all that's wrong in our lives — past, present and future — as never having happened, because Jesus has taken the responsibility for it.
  • He makes us new people — Jesus described it as being born again.
  • He guarantees to us eternal life as members of His family.
  • He gives us His Holy Spirit to live inside us as our friend and helper.
